January 12th - Back to the Gym!

Today was the first day back to the gym. I was totally psyched all day. After a delicious meal, cooked by my lovely fiancée Megan, I headed on over.

To start out, a nice warm up and a few pushups to add to the count. I pulled out the mats and set up one of my favorite starting setups. Two taller mats stacked up with a crash mat below. Great for warming up the basics...backflips, frontflips, sideflips, and gainers. Once I got more comfortable I moved to one footed fronts, and then threw a half twist into it for aerial twists. They went pretty well, however I would love to work them with more seriousness tomorrow.

In the middle of practice I sort of moved about, catching up with people I had not seen in a while and worked with Colleen to get her backs, fronts, and vaults back to where they were. (Girl you had better keep up with your blog now that you are back).

Nick and I took to the 6' stack of mats and worked on fronts and gainers. It is so key on fronts to pop UP and not forward, keeping your head in to spot between your legs in a tight tuck. Being so high this tuck is QUICK so it is a pop in and out to a CONTROLLED fall. This looks beautiful, and it also allows you to throw the tuck the same way at AN height! The only difference is how far you fall after. (I must give credit to Daniel Ilabaca here as I learned to do this from watching him.)

Speaking of Daniel, please watch this. I hope it moves and motivates you as it did me:

As for gainers from such height. I recommend throwing the first one out a bit if you are used to landing them at a proper close distance. After a few of these it becomes really natural to play with how tight you tuck so that you can land full out, gracefully.

Overall a great first day back. Got all of the moves back to the fresh side of my mind...(props to Colleen for throwing and sticking her first ever front from major height!) Can't wait for tomorrow...the plan is to play with precision fronts so stay tuned....!
